Maritimo win first leg in Europa League

July 16/10

Maritimo have won their first leg in the Europa League over Irish club Sporting Fingal 3-2. Fingal opened the scoring at the 33rd minute mark when Glen Crowe headed in a cross. Maritimo fans had to wait until the 78th minute mark to see the home side bring the game to even as a weak Ricardo Esteves header was not stopped by keeper Brendan Clarke. Then Maritimo took the lead seven minutes later when Cherrad tapped in a loose ball but feisty Fingal brought the game back even just two minutes later as Fitzgerald capitilized on a Maritimo defensive error and beat Pecanha with a chapeu. Maritmo needed an extra time marker from Tcho as he slid to get the shot away and give the home side the victory. Maritimo will now travel to Ireland next week and hope to hold the advantage so they can move onto the third qualifying round.
